Alfonso Calero grew up in Manila with National Geographic on the coffee table and his father's camera in his hands. After moving to Australia at 15 and spending a year travelling Europe, he eventually turned a lifelong passion into a professional photography career at 30.
The path there wound through hotel porter work and tour guiding across multiple languages, and it's that background in connecting with people and places that shapes everything he does. His photo walks grew from a single Sydney outing into a national business now operating across six Australian cities and internationally in destinations including Tasmania, the Philippines, Japan, Spain and the Faroe Islands.
In this episode Alfonso talks about using the camera to build empathy with local communities, the importance of returning to a location repeatedly to truly understand it, and the logistics of running photography experiences that work for complete beginners and experienced shooters alike.

James Andrew bought his first camera in 2018 to document his daughter growing up. He was working as an electrician at the time and spending his days off driving out into the Rockies alone. A Tuesday night aurora at Peyto Lake at minus 30 changed everything.
Three years of learning the craft later, James walked away from a 20 year electrician career to pursue photography full time. Based in Calgary, minutes from Banff National Park, he photographs aurora, storm light and the fleeting moments that most people never slow down enough to see.
In this episode James talks about balancing the creative pull of the Rockies with prairie landscapes, how a Discord community accelerated his improvement through honest critique, the gap between social media growth and actual print sales, and how he's building a print based business while keeping his storytelling authentically human amid the spread of AI imagery.

David Baker started with a small digital camera photographing standing stones. Early photo blogging and the feedback it generated gradually shifted his focus from simple documentation toward images that convey how a place actually feels.
Based in rural Aberdeenshire after a lifetime on the south coast of England, David works exclusively in long term projects, each with its own constraints and parameters. Five books published, more than 20 exhibitions including three appearances at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and an Arts Council funded solo show at Southampton City Art Gallery mark out a serious and sustained practice.
In this episode David talks about using mapped circles, triangles and specific times as creative constraints, the role of instinct over heavy planning, and why printing and handmade books are the essential final step in his process. He also reflects on how moving to northeast Scotland changed his subjects while keeping his project based approach completely intact.

Tim Cooper is a full time picture framer based in northwest Tasmania who spends as much time as possible in the Tarkine, one of the most significant and threatened wilderness regions in the Southern Hemisphere.
Since 2016 his photography has focused on the rainforests, rivers and rugged coastlines of this ancient landscape and the very real threats it faces from logging, mining and climate driven fire. His work documents not just the landscape but activists, burn scars and threatened species like the swift parrot, images built around conservation impact rather than likes.
In this episode Tim talks about the challenges of working full time while pursuing serious landscape and wildlife photography, how selling at markets helped him refine his personal style and curation, and why he believes the printed image is where photography's real power lies. He's also candid about careful location sharing and the responsibility that comes with photographing sensitive environments.

Kévin Pagès took a winding road to Iceland. Born in Spain, raised in France, a year in New Zealand sparked his passion for photography, and studies in Montreal turned it into a career. He's been based in Iceland for eight years now and shows no signs of leaving.
His early studio work and cinematic portrait style have evolved into abstract landscape photography, often using drones to explore the shapes and patterns of glacier rivers from above. It's distinctive work that earned him Sony Emerging Photographer of the Year in 2016/2017 and a Broncolor GenNext ambassadorship.
In this episode Kevin talks about co-founding Arctic Journeys, a private Jeep based photo tour company, his go with the flow approach to shooting in unpredictable weather, and the realities of pricing, licensing and admin that come with running a photography business. He also shares his thoughts on AI and the growing pressures of social media.

Paul Moon has been photographing the Yorkshire Wolds for years, and that depth of time in one place comes through clearly in his work. It's a landscape most people drive past without stopping, chalk valleys, dry grassland, ancient woodland and wildflower meadows, and Paul has made it his life's work to show people what they're missing.
His preference for upright compositions and mid-range lenses over wide angles suits the Wolds perfectly, a landscape defined by twisting forms, shadows and intimate detail rather than grand panoramas.
In this episode Paul talks about his long term project focused on Millington Pastures and plans for a self-published book, the influences of Joe Cornish and David Ward on his thinking, and how photography has deepened his understanding of local geology, flora and environmental change including ash dieback. He also touches on navigating access issues with gamekeepers and building relationships with local landowners.

Candace Dyar started photographing as a way to manage anxiety and depression, taking her Canon SLR out on hikes as a therapeutic outlet. That early connection to nature, combined with an art history background, gradually shaped a practice with a much bigger purpose.
Based in Washington State, Candace now works at the intersection of wildlife photography and conservation advocacy, partnering with organisations like the World Wildlife Fund and Defenders of Wildlife to draw attention to threatened species and the ecological importance of apex predators. A wolf encounter in Yellowstone in October 2021 was a turning point that shifted her focus decisively toward wildlife.
In this episode Candace talks about using images and captions to challenge misinformation about wolves, educating people on coexistence and the reality of living alongside predators, running workshops in wild places, and balancing the admin side of a photography business with actually getting out and shooting.

Simon Baxter's path to photography wasn't straightforward. A back injury in 2012 ended his adrenaline fuelled outdoor life, mountain biking, kayaking, snowboarding, and forced him to find a slower way back to the natural world. A labradoodle puppy called Meg did exactly that.
Their woodland walks around the North York Moors gave Simon something unexpected. The solitude, the complexity of trees and the therapeutic benefits of time spent among them became the foundation of an entire career. He's now recognised as one of the world's leading woodland photographers.
In this episode Simon talks about moving from craftsman to artist, using composition to speak for the trees rather than simply document them. He discusses shooting locally to learn a woodland's rhythms, the mycorrhizal wood wide web as creative inspiration, and building a sustainable business through YouTube, workshops, books and prints alongside his involvement in the 6-1-7 Club with Thomas Heaton.

Daniel Tschurtschenthaler has spent 20 years photographing the Dolomites from his home in Sexten, and it shows. He sees the landscape in frames constantly, and that deep familiarity with a place comes through in his work.
A former painter and varnisher, Daniel turned his hobby into a full time career and now runs his own showroom in Sesto. He was also the subject of a three year Servus TV documentary about his life and practice, released in 2022.
In this episode Daniel talks about using paragliding to read weather and reach high alpine locations, sleeping on peaks to photograph Milky Way arches, and the aurora fever that gripped him after photographing the northern lights over the Dolomites for the first time in 2023. He's also candid about processing philosophy, the problem of AI imagery and why he won't share sensitive wildlife locations.

Zac Henderson has been shooting since he was 15, starting on his mother's film camera. These days he and his wife live and travel full time in a motorhome across the US, and that nomadic life feeds directly into his work.
Zac's photography is rooted in astrophysics, geological time and the kind of perspective shifts that come from thinking seriously about humanity's place in the cosmos. That draws him to deserts, rock formations and volcanic landscapes, places that feel like they could exist on another planet entirely.
In this episode he talks about his abstract Dark Matter series using magnets and iron filings, how recent high quality space imagery has influenced his thinking, and his experiments with full spectrum and infrared photography. He's also honest about the challenge of making work that communicates clearly in an era of AI generated imagery.

Naomi Savage's photography grew out of a life in music. Shooting gigs in Belfast gave her an eye for light and timing, and after taking night classes in 2017 and learning manual settings properly, she turned that eye toward the landscapes on her doorstep in Northern Ireland.
These days Naomi splits her time between solo fine art shoots around the Mourne Mountains, forests and waterfalls, and group hikes with The Mourne Hikers where the pace and storytelling are completely different. She's open about photography being good for her mental health and is balancing a day job alongside dedicated shooting days.
In this episode she talks about tough hikes like Carrauntoohil and the Devil's Coach Road, influences like Henry Turner and Alex Nail, accurate color and natural edits for print, and using film photography to reset when digital starts to feel stale.

Brigitte Bourger spent over 35 years as a pharmacist in French Polynesia before devoting herself fully to photography. Living in Tahiti gives her direct access to some of the world's most extraordinary marine environments, and that proximity shapes everything she does.
Her Ephémères Impressions project, a minimalist series exploring the fragility of Pacific marine life, resulted in a sold-out book that won gold at both PX3 Paris and TIFA Tokyo. It's serious, internationally recognised work built around color, abstraction and a deep concern for environmental fragility.
In this episode Brigitte talks about finding her direction through workshops in Japan, the influence of Michael Kenna on her thinking, and how an instinct led, tripod and filter based process defines her approach. She also reflects on the challenge of earning recognition as a photographer in an era of image overload and AI.

Audrey Wilson has been passionate about photography since picking up a film camera at 13. Based near the coast in California, her work spans seascapes, beach sunsets, birds and macro photography and it's that range that keeps her creative spark alive.
A member of OCScapers in Orange County, Audrey values the shared knowledge and camaraderie that comes from shooting alongside fellow photographers. In this episode she talks about how studying other photographers helped her move beyond flat images, building depth through leading lines, foreground interest and intentional composition.
Travel shapes the atmosphere and memories she tries to convey, particularly the feeling of ocean movement in her seascapes. Away from the camera Audrey works as an accountant, and photography has become a welcome antidote to that world.

Laura Dyer's photography began with a single wild dog sighting — and never stopped. What followed was a move away from accounting and into full-time wildlife photography, guiding, and bespoke trip design across Africa and beyond.
Her approach has evolved significantly over time. Where documentary instincts once dominated, she now embraces slower, more artistic techniques — including ICM and slow shutter — to bring emotional depth to wildlife imagery. She also champions the value of landscape within wildlife photography, arguing that a strong sense of place elevates a single animal moment into something far more resonant.
In this conversation, Laura reflects on the mentorship and community that shaped her early years in South Africa, and how extended time in Kenya during COVID became an unexpected creative laboratory. She's candid about the realities of the industry — the algorithm pressures of social media, the severe toll tourism shutdowns took on local communities, and the logistical demands of running a photography business.
She also shares close encounters with elephants and polar bears, her commitment to ethical risk management, and how switching subjects and constraints can completely renew creative inspiration.
A former accountant turned full-time photographer and guide, Laura's story is one of deliberate reinvention — and a deepening attention to the natural world.

Sandra Bartocha: Why Intimate Details Beat Grand Vistas
Sandra Bartocha grew up with a photojournalist father and a rural childhood that pointed her firmly toward nature — and away from people. That foundation shaped a practice built on emotional resonance, where intimate details, shifting light, and quiet moods matter far more than sweeping panoramas.
Based in Germany, Sandra works across natural landscapes, forests, plants, and abstract imagery, always with the same underlying intention: to evoke feeling rather than record fact. She builds her work in long-form bodies — books, exhibitions, audiovisual shows — rather than chasing the rhythms of social media. Her LYS project, a years-long exploration of northern Europe, resulted in both a 45-minute audiovisual presentation and a substantial coffee table book.
In this conversation, Sandra discusses photographing locally, her preference for forests and the sea, and why she keeps post-processing minimal by focusing on getting things right in-camera. She reflects on what success actually means to her — personal expression and time spent outdoors — and speaks candidly about navigating a male-dominated field. She also considers where photography is heading amid AI and a renewed interest in film.
A deeply considered photographer whose work has been recognised in Wildlife Photographer of the Year multiple times, Sandra's approach is a reminder that restraint and intention are creative strengths.
